Say GDPR One More Time!!

There is a good chance you have been getting spammed by numerous emails touting GDPR compliance over the past week. In the small chance that you opened any of these emails, you might be asking yourself, “do I need to be GDPR compliant? What does that mean? Who are these people?”

Distilled down to a quickly digestible level, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European privacy law that goes in effect tomorrow, May 25, 2018. It exists to protect people’s information when interacting with businesses online. There is nothing surprising by the privacy law – it is largely consent-based. But there are likely a few tweaks that you may need to make to your processes and communications if you have visitors, prospects or customers from Europe.

 

CONSENT.

Ask for it. Plain and simple. Don’t take anyone’s information without collecting proof of consent – this includes IP addresses and cookies.

 

THE DETAILS.

If a visitor agrees to the collection of their data, you need to disclose what you intend to do with that data, where it will be stored and how it will be protected.

Once you have updated any processes that you may have around the collection of personal data, you will need to update your privacy policies and let your audience know that you are now compliant.
