A Softer Online Space for Healing and Hope
When we think about the work that truly moves us, it’s the projects that hold space for humanity at its most tender. Our collaboration with Solace Grief Support Society was one of those projects - an opportunity to create a digital home that gently supports, comforts, and connects people navigating loss.
Solace offers grief support programs and services that remind people they’re not alone — a compassionate community built on understanding, empathy, and care. Through our Big Heart Grant, we were honoured to help bring that mission to life online.
The Goal
Enhance the website for better user experience, lead generation, and online credibility — all while preserving the calm, heart-centered spirit of Solace.
Grief can feel overwhelming, and we wanted Solace’s website to feel like the opposite: a space of ease, warmth, and trust. From clearer navigation to more intentional messaging, every update was designed to help visitors find what they need — whether that’s support, connection, or a way to give back.
Our Approach
1. A Clearer, Kinder Path
We started by optimizing the homepage to immediately communicate who Solace is and how they can help — with one essential message front and centre: this is a free service, open to anyone who needs support.
Grief can feel isolating, and we wanted every visitor to know right away that they’re not alone — and that compassionate help is available at no cost. The messaging and layout were designed to meet people where they are, offering clarity, reassurance, and an easy way to take that first step.
Calls to action like “How We Can Help,” “Schedule Your Free Appointment,” and “Learn More About Our Services” gently guide visitors toward understanding what Solace offers and how to get started — all within a calm, soothing visual environment that reflects the heart of their mission.
2. Redesigned Pages for Ease and Understanding
We restructured key pages like Donate and Programs & Services to make it simple and intuitive for visitors to explore what’s available. Whether someone is looking for one-on-one support, group programs, or helpful resources, every detail was organized to offer comfort, clarity, and a sense of calm at every click.
Each page was designed to reduce overwhelm — using clear headings, gentle language, and open layouts that help visitors find exactly what they need, at their own pace.
Creative Directions
We explored four design directions to capture Solace’s mission, each offering a unique way to convey warmth, calm, and support:
Concept 1: Minimalist, symbolic graphics with soothing gradients for comfort and renewal.
Concept 2: Professional typography and solid colour blocks for a trustworthy, welcoming feel.
Concept 3 (chosen): Soft, serene, and soothing with calming colours, gentle fonts, and open layouts — creating an emotionally safe space aligned with the brand.
Concept 4: Minimal, mystically inspired visuals with geometric shapes to add meaning and connection while remaining serene.
Each concept was rooted in the same goal: creating a digital home where visitors could feel calm, supported, and seen.
A Mission That Matters
Collaborating with Solace reminded us how powerful thoughtful design can be — not just in how a website looks, but in how it feels.
From a practical standpoint, the redesigned site now offers:
Improved user experience that reduces overwhelm and confusion.
Stronger online credibility through cohesive design and clear messaging.
But more importantly, it offers something deeper — an online space that mirrors Solace’s in-person care: gentle, human, and deeply supportive.
A Heartfelt Collaboration
This Big Heart Grant project was a true meeting of missions. Solace Grief Support Society shows up every day to make the hardest moments a little softer for others — and we’re grateful to have played a part in making their digital presence reflect that same compassion.

What is the Big Heart Grant?
The Big Heart Grant is our way of giving back to the nonprofits and community groups doing heart-forward work. We offer a selection of creative services—like branding, website design, or strategy—to organizations making a real impact (no strings attached).
Who can apply?
We’re looking for registered nonprofits within Canada with a mission that makes us say, “YES, let’s help.” If you’re supporting your community in meaningful ways and could use a digital or design boost, we want to hear from you.
What kind of projects qualify?
Each project is different, but past Big Heart collaborations have included new websites, refreshed branding, digital campaigns, and more. We tailor each project to what your organization actually needs—not what we think looks cute (even though we love cute).
How often is the grant awarded?
We typically select a handful of Big Heart projects each year based on capacity, impact, and alignment with our team’s expertise.
What’s the catch?
There isn’t one. Seriously. We believe in the power of good design to do good in the world. The Big Heart Grant is our way of showing up for the organizations that show up for everyone else.
