Big Heart Highlight: Okotoks Food Bank
A heart-filled design project focused on community, connection, and compassion
It’s no secret we love teaming up with organizations doing incredible work, and this Big Heart Grant project had all the good stuff:
Community
Collaboration
A chance to create something that really matters
This time, we teamed up with the amazing folks at the Okotoks Food Bank to explore a refreshed homepage and “Needs Help” page - two of the most important spaces on their website.
The Okotoks Food Bank supports individuals and families through programs like their Hamper Program and Help Yourself Shelf, offering not just food, but dignity, care, and connection. We were honoured to help reimagine how that mission shows up online.
The Goal
Create an inviting, easy-to-navigate online experience that makes it simple to find help or to offer it.
We focused on two key areas of the site:
The homepage, designed to speak to both those seeking support and those ready to give it.
The “Needs Help” page, designed to offer clear, stigma-free guidance for individuals and families navigating food insecurity.
We wanted every visitor to feel seen, supported, and confident in taking their next step.
Our Approach
Let’s be honest: asking for help is hard. So our design approach focused on making that process feel as warm, human, and welcoming as possible.
The homepage was built around clarity and connection. We prioritized strong CTAs like Get Help, Donate Now, and Volunteer, and built in space for impact stories and community updates to help visitors connect with the Food Bank’s mission right away.
The “Needs Help” page was focused on being clear and comprehensive. We used headings, bullet points, and friendly icons to make the information super easy to scan and understand.
Two Design Directions, Same Big Heart
To bring the vision to life, we explored two creative directions:
Concept 1 used a clean and professional aesthetic, with pops of colour and light, playful touches. It’s trustworthy and full of warmth.
Concept 2 leaned into playful graphics and vibrant colours - perfect for creating a friendly, stigma-free space full of energy and optimism.
We were seriously in love with both - each capturing a different side of the Food Bank’s incredible work.
A Design-Driven Way to Show Up
This project was developed through our Big Heart Grant, and we poured all our love for thoughtful, inclusive design into every pixel. We’re proud to support the Okotoks Food Bank in imagining how thoughtful design can amplify their mission and invite more people into the circle of care.
And if you’re part of a nonprofit doing big-hearted work and think your digital presence could use a little extra love, consider applying for a Big Heart Grant. We’d be thrilled to work with you.
Big Heart Grant FAQ
What is the Big Heart Grant?
The Big Heart Grant is our way of giving back to the nonprofits and community groups doing heart-forward work. We offer a selection of creative services—like branding, website design, or strategy—to organizations making a real impact (no strings attached).
Who can apply?
We’re looking for registered nonprofits within Canada with a mission that makes us say, “YES, let’s help.” If you’re supporting your community in meaningful ways and could use a digital or design boost, we want to hear from you.
What kind of projects qualify?
Each project is different, but past Big Heart collaborations have included new websites, refreshed branding, digital campaigns, and more. We tailor each project to what your organization actually needs—not what we think looks cute (even though we love cute).
How often is the grant awarded?
We typically select a handful of Big Heart projects each year based on capacity, impact, and alignment with our team’s expertise.
What’s the catch?
There isn’t one. Seriously. We believe in the power of good design to do good in the world. The Big Heart Grant is our way of showing up for the organizations that show up for everyone else.
How can I apply?
Easy! Just head to freshly-pressed.ca/we-like-big-hearts, fill out the application form, and tell us a bit about your organization and your dream project. We can’t wait to hear your story.
